Is Melonex an Antibiotic? No, and Neither Is Meloxicam

Quick answer

Is Melonex an antibiotic? No. The Melonex capsules sold here are a dietary supplement with a 500 mg blend of amino acids, and they do not fight infection. The meloxicam drug that shares the name is an NSAID, also not an antibiotic. An infection needs a clinician's diagnosis.

What kind of product is Melonex, if not an antibiotic?

Melonex is a dietary supplement in capsules. Each one holds a 500 mg proprietary blend of L-citrulline DL-malate, L-arginine alpha-ketoglutarate and L-arginine HCl.

Arginine is the raw material the body uses to make nitric oxide, a signal that relaxes vessel muscle (Cziraki 2020, arginine-NO pathway). Nothing on the label points to bacteria, and the front claims are "Heart Support*", "Circulation Support*" and "Natural Formula*".

Is the meloxicam called Melonex an antibiotic?

No. Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, an NSAID, prescribed for pain, swelling and stiffness of arthritis (MedlinePlus, meloxicam). It does not kill bacteria.

How can you tell what a Melonex product is?

Read the label panel. A supplement carries a "Supplement Facts" box, and a drug carries a "Drug Facts" box or a prescription label.

  1. Find the box

Our bottle shows Supplement Facts, with a 500 mg blend and serving size of 1 capsule.

  2. Read the claim line

Supplements may say "support", but may not claim to treat disease (FDA, structure/function claims).

What should you do if you think you have an infection?

See a clinician. Only a diagnosis can tell a bacterial infection from a viral one, and only a prescriber can choose an antibiotic.

Keep taking prescribed medicine, including any antibiotic course, exactly as directed. Do not swap it for a supplement, and do not take an old antibiotic left over from another illness. For a pet, call your vet, and never give the capsules to an animal (FDA, pain relievers for pets).

If you want the capsules for what they are, a heart and circulation supplement, these are the larger packs.

FAQ01

Questions about Melonex and antibiotics

Can Melonex capsules clear a bacterial infection?

No. The blend holds amino acids only, and no ingredient on the label acts on bacteria. A bacterial infection needs a prescriber's assessment and, if warranted, a prescribed antibiotic.

Why do some sites list Melonex with antibiotics?

Usually a mix-up of brand names or a badly sorted drug list. The meloxicam brand is an NSAID, and the capsules here are a supplement. Neither is an antibiotic.

Is there an antibiotic ingredient in the capsule shell?

No. The shell is hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, a plant-cellulose material, and the other ingredients are microcrystalline cellulose and magnesium stearate (21 CFR 184.1440, magnesium stearate).
