Blood Pressure Numbers: What Normal, Elevated, Stage 1 and Stage 2 Mean
Blood pressure numbers are two readings in mm Hg: the top (systolic) and the bottom (diastolic). The American Heart Association calls under 120 and under 80 normal. Stage 1 high blood pressure starts at 130 on top or 80 on the bottom, and stage 2 at 140 or 90. Above 180/120 needs a second reading right away.

What are normal blood pressure numbers?
Normal blood pressure numbers are a top number under 120 and a bottom number under 80. The American Heart Association sorts every adult reading into one of five groups: normal, elevated, stage 1, stage 2 and severe (AHA, blood pressure readings).
Both numbers are measured in millimeters of mercury, written mm Hg. A reading of 118/76 is said "118 over 76".
Type the two numbers from one reading into the finder below to see its group. Keep in mind that a single reading is a snapshot, not a diagnosis.
- NormalTop number Under 120Bottom number and under 80
- ElevatedTop number 120-129Bottom number and under 80
- Stage 1 highTop number 130-139Bottom number or 80-89
- Stage 2 highTop number 140 or higherBottom number or 90 or higher
- Severe: call your doctor nowTop number Over 180Bottom number and/or over 120
Type both numbers from one reading to see its category. One reading is not a diagnosis; a doctor uses repeat readings.
Categories from the American Heart Association (AHA, blood pressure readings). Nearly half of U.S. adults have high blood pressure (CDC, high blood pressure facts). A reading over 180/120 with chest pain, shortness of breath, back pain, weakness, vision change or trouble speaking needs 911.
Side by side02
What are the AHA blood pressure categories?
The AHA blood pressure categories run from normal to severe, and each one has a top-number range and a bottom-number range. The word between them matters. Normal and elevated need both numbers in range ("and"). Stage 1 and stage 2 need only one ("or") (AHA, blood pressure readings).
So a reading lands in the highest group that either number reaches. The table shows each range with a sample reading.
| Category | Top number (systolic) | Link | Bottom number (diastolic) | Sample reading |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | Under 120 | and | Under 80 | 116/74 |
| Elevated | 120-129 | and | Under 80 | 124/78 |
| Stage 1 high blood pressure | 130-139 | or | 80-89 | 134/78 or 118/84 |
| Stage 2 high blood pressure | 140 or higher | or | 90 or higher | 146/82 or 128/92 |
| Severe | Over 180 | and/or | Over 120 | 186/110 |
Worked examples03
How do you read a blood pressure result like 128/82?
To read a result like 128/82, check each number against the chart and take the higher group. The top number, 128, sits in elevated. The bottom number, 82, sits in stage 1. So the reading counts as stage 1 (AHA, blood pressure readings).
The same rule explains why 120/80 is not "normal" on the AHA chart. A bottom number of 80 is the first step of stage 1.
124/76
Top number 120-129, bottom under 80. Both fit the elevated row, so the reading is elevated.
136/88
Top number 130-139 and bottom 80-89. Either one alone would make it stage 1.
132/94
The top number says stage 1, but the bottom number reaches 90. The higher group wins: stage 2.
Home cuff04
How do you measure blood pressure at home?
To measure blood pressure at home, use a validated automatic cuff that wraps the upper arm and fits its size. The AHA does not recommend wrist or finger monitors (AHA, home BP monitoring).
Good technique matters as much as the device. Small slips, such as talking or a cuff over a sleeve, can shift the numbers.
Wait 30 minutes
No smoking, caffeine or exercise in the half hour before. Empty your bladder first.
Sit still for 5 minutes
Sit quietly without talking. Rest your arm on a flat surface at heart level.
Cuff on bare skin
Place it just above the bend of the elbow, not over clothing.
Two readings, one minute apart
Write both down. Measure at the same time each day so the log is fair to compare.
Check the monitor yearly
About once a year, compare it with your clinic's equipment (AHA, home BP monitoring).
Too high, too low05
What should you do if a reading is over 180/120?
If a reading is over 180 on top or 120 on the bottom, wait 1 minute and measure again. If it stays that high and you feel fine, contact your healthcare professional. The AHA calls this severe hypertension (AHA, blood pressure readings).
A high reading with symptoms is an emergency. Chest pain, shortness of breath, back pain, numbness, weakness, vision changes or trouble speaking mean call 911.
Numbers can also run too low. Low blood pressure is a reading below 90/60. Many people with it feel nothing, but it can cause dizziness, fainting, blurry vision or confusion (NHLBI, low blood pressure).
A reading above 180/120 that comes with any of the symptoms listed above. Do not wait to see if a second reading drops.

How many adults have high blood pressure?
About 48.1% of U.S. adults, or 119.9 million people, have high blood pressure, by the CDC's count. Only 22.5% of them have it under control (CDC, high blood pressure facts).
In 2024, high blood pressure was a primary or contributing cause of 680,179 U.S. deaths (CDC, high blood pressure facts).
2025 guideline07
What changed in the 2025 blood pressure guideline?
The 2025 AHA/ACC high blood pressure guideline, released August 14, 2025, replaces the 2017 guideline. It draws on evidence through early 2025 (AHA, 2025 BP guideline).
Its main shifts are about how care is planned and delivered. The guideline adds risk scoring and gives home readings a bigger role.
- Uses the PREVENT risk equations to guide treatment decisions
- Adds new advice for chronic kidney disease, pregnancy and resistant hypertension
- Puts weight on team-based care and home blood pressure monitoring
- Emphasizes single-pill combination medicines
Your doctor applies the guideline to your own risk. Bring your home log to the visit.
Supplements08
Can a supplement like Melonex change your blood pressure numbers?
No trial has tested whether Melonex changes blood pressure numbers. The capsules hold a 500 mg blend of citrulline and two arginine forms, and the label allows up to two a day.
The single ingredients have moved readings a little at far larger doses. Arginine at 4 to 24 g a day lowered systolic pressure by about 5.4 mm Hg in pooled trials (Dong 2011, arginine meta-analysis). Citrulline at 3 to 9 g a day lowered it by about 4.1 mm Hg (Barkhidarian 2019, citrulline meta-analysis). Two capsules give 1 g of blend.
Keep taking prescribed medicine exactly as your doctor set it. Arginine can add to blood pressure drugs and push numbers too low (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine).
A week of home readings before and after any change gives you and your doctor real numbers to compare. Read the Melonex dose check, the supplements and heart medicines guide and our heart health habits.
FAQ09
Blood pressure number questions
Is 120/80 a normal blood pressure?
Not on the AHA chart. A top number of 120 is elevated, and a bottom number of 80 is the first step of stage 1. Because one number in a higher group moves the whole reading up, 120/80 counts as stage 1 (AHA, blood pressure readings).
Is 130/80 considered high blood pressure?
Yes. The AHA puts 130/80 in stage 1 high blood pressure, since stage 1 starts at 130 systolic or 80 diastolic. Talk with your doctor about repeat readings and what they mean for your own risk (AHA, blood pressure readings).
Does one high reading mean I have high blood pressure?
No, one reading is not a diagnosis. Numbers shift with caffeine, talking, a full bladder or a badly placed cuff. The AHA suggests two readings a minute apart at the same time each day, written down, so your doctor sees a pattern (AHA, home BP monitoring).
Are wrist blood pressure monitors accurate enough?
The AHA does not recommend wrist or finger monitors for home use. It advises a validated automatic cuff that wraps the upper arm and is sized to fit it, checked against clinic equipment about once a year (AHA, home BP monitoring).
What blood pressure reading is too low?
A reading below 90/60 mm Hg is low blood pressure. It may cause no symptoms, or it may bring dizziness, fainting, blurry vision, nausea or confusion. Blood pressure medicines are one known cause, so mention new symptoms to your doctor (NHLBI, low blood pressure).
Should I check my blood pressure after coffee?
Wait at least 30 minutes after caffeine, smoking or exercise before you measure. Then sit quietly for 5 minutes with your arm supported at heart level. Readings taken right after coffee may not match your usual numbers (AHA, home BP monitoring).
Does the 2025 guideline change the blood pressure categories?
The 2025 AHA/ACC guideline summary we cite does not list new category numbers. It describes PREVENT risk equations, home monitoring, team-based care, single-pill combinations and new advice for kidney disease, pregnancy and resistant hypertension (AHA, 2025 BP guideline).
