What Does Melon Extract Do? Watermelon, Citrulline and Melonex

Quick answer

What does melon extract do? Watermelon contains citrulline, an amino acid the kidneys convert into arginine, and that link is the reason melon extracts are sold. The Melonex label, however, lists no melon extract. It lists L-citrulline DL-malate, so the name suggests a melon that the ingredient panel never states.

What does melon extract do in the body?

Melon extract, usually watermelon extract, is sold for its citrulline. The amino acid is named after Citrullus lanatus, the watermelon, which holds about 0.7 to 3.6 g per kg of fresh fruit in both flesh and rind (Aguayo 2021, L-citrulline review).

In the kidneys, about 83% of citrulline becomes arginine, so more arginine reaches the blood than when arginine itself is swallowed (Aguayo 2021, L-citrulline review). Arginine then feeds the body's nitric oxide system.

How much watermelon equals a trial dose?

A trial dose of 3 g of citrulline equals roughly 0.8 to 4.3 kg of fresh watermelon, depending on the cultivar. That is simple division of the figures above.

The capsule weight includes the malate, so the citrulline itself is less.

Is there melon extract in Melonex?

No melon extract appears on the Melonex label. The blend lists L-citrulline DL-malate, L-arginine alpha-ketoglutarate and L-arginine HCl, and no source for the citrulline.

The front says "Natural Formula*", a phrase the label never defines. Read the supplement facts for the full list.

What have citrulline trials found?

Eight trials of L-citrulline at 3 to 9 g a day found systolic pressure about 4.1 mm Hg lower, while the diastolic drop was not significant (Barkhidarian 2019, citrulline meta-analysis). Those were purified citrulline doses, not melon extracts.

Keep taking prescribed medicine

Citrulline may add to blood pressure drugs, nitrates and sildenafil. Ask your pharmacist first, and read the L-citrulline malate page.

FAQ01

Melonex questions people ask

Is Melonex made from watermelon?

The label does not say. It lists L-citrulline DL-malate and two arginine salts, with no melon, fruit or extract named. Ask the order desk at +1 (855) 889-3137 if the citrulline source matters to you.

Does watermelon rind have more citrulline?

One review reports citrulline in both the flesh and the rind, at about 0.7 to 3.6 g per kg of fresh fruit depending on the cultivar. It gives no ranking of flesh versus rind.

Can melon extract replace blood pressure medicine?

No. Citrulline trials found small drops in readings, and none tested melon extract as a replacement for medicine. Keep taking what your doctor prescribed and talk to them before adding any supplement.
