A proprietary blend is a group of ingredients listed under one name, in descending order by weight, with only the blend's total weight declared (21 CFR 101.36, blends). The amount of each ingredient in the blend does not have to be listed.
The rule is legal and common. It keeps a recipe private, and it keeps readers from comparing doses.
What can you work out from a 500 mg proprietary blend?
From the order alone you can set a ceiling and a floor for each line. If three ingredients share 500 mg and are listed most to least, line k holds at most 500/k mg, and line 1 holds at least a third.
