Potassium and Blood Pressure: Food First, Pills Rarely
Potassium blood pressure advice starts with food. NIH says adults need 3,400 mg a day (men) or 2,600 mg (women), and that more potassium with less sodium may lower blood pressure and stroke risk. People with kidney disease or certain heart drugs can reach dangerous potassium levels, so ask a clinician first.

What does potassium blood pressure research say?
Potassium affects blood pressure through balance with sodium. Low potassium intake can raise blood pressure, especially when sodium is high, and more potassium with less sodium may lower blood pressure and stroke risk (NIH ODS, Potassium).
Adults 19 and older need 3,400 mg a day (men) or 2,600 mg (women) (NIH ODS, Potassium).
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Men 19+ | 3,400 mg a day |
| Women 19+ | 2,600 mg a day |
| Foods | Dried apricots, prunes, bananas, potatoes, spinach, beans, milk, yogurt |
Who should be careful with potassium?
People with chronic kidney disease, and people taking ACE inhibitors or potassium-sparing diuretics, can develop dangerously high potassium. Salt substitutes count too (NIH ODS, Potassium).
- Ask before switching to a salt substitute
- Ask before any potassium pill
- Ask before starting arginine
Do not stop a blood pressure drug to eat more potassium. Your clinician sets both.
Does arginine change potassium?
Arginine may raise potassium in some people. A Health Library review says it may raise potassium and strain the kidneys (Health Library, Arginine), and Mayo Clinic says not to combine it with potassium-sparing diuretics (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine).
Melonex holds two arginine forms, so the caution applies. One capsule is 0.5 g of blend, far below trial doses, but the drug interaction does not wait for a big dose. Read the side effects page.

FAQ01
Melonex questions people ask
Can you take potassium pills for blood pressure?
Ask a clinician first. NIH puts food first, and kidney disease or some heart drugs can push potassium too high.
Should I ask my doctor before using a potassium-based salt substitute?
Yes, if you have kidney disease or take an ACE inhibitor or a potassium-sparing diuretic. These products swap sodium for potassium, which can build up to dangerous levels in those groups.
Does Melonex contain potassium?
The label lists no potassium. Arginine may still raise potassium in some people, so tell your pharmacist about your medicines.
