Magnesium Stearate Safety: What the Flow Agent in Melonex Is For

Quick answer

Magnesium stearate safety is covered by an FDA rule: the agency affirms it as generally recognized as safe when used as a lubricant, release agent or processing aid, with no limit beyond good manufacturing practice. Melonex lists it last among its other ingredients and does not print the amount.

What is magnesium stearate?

Magnesium stearate is the magnesium salt of stearic acid, which is made from edible sources (21 CFR 184.1440, magnesium stearate). In capsules it acts as a flow agent, so powder does not stick to filling machines.

It is not an active ingredient. It is not part of the proprietary blend either, so it does not count toward the 500 mg.

Is magnesium stearate safe to swallow?

Magnesium stearate is affirmed by FDA as generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for human food use, as a lubricant and release agent, nutrient supplement or processing aid (21 CFR 184.1440, magnesium stearate). The rule sets no limit other than current good manufacturing practice.

GRAS is a regulatory status for an ingredient. It is not a test of one bottle, and FDA does not approve finished supplements before sale (FDA, supplement Q&A).

What this does not tell you

The Melonex label does not print how much magnesium stearate a capsule holds, and no lab report is published.

What else is in a Melonex capsule besides the blend?

Besides the 500 mg blend, a Melonex capsule holds three other ingredients, all listed on the label.

FAQ01

Melonex questions people ask

Does magnesium stearate count as magnesium supplement?

No. It is the magnesium salt of stearic acid, used as a processing aid. The Melonex label gives no magnesium amount and no Daily Value for it, so do not count it as a mineral source.

Is the Melonex capsule shell made of gelatin?

No. The shell is hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, a plant cellulose, according to the label. That makes it a non-gelatin capsule, though the label does not use the word vegetarian.

Why do capsules need a flow agent at all?

Powders can cling to machines and clump, so a small amount of flow agent keeps the fill even. Magnesium stearate is used as a lubricant and release agent for that reason.
