L-Citrulline for Blood Pressure: Doses and Results

Quick answer

L-citrulline for blood pressure was tested in 8 trials using 3 to 9 g a day. Together they found systolic pressure about 4.1 mm Hg lower, while the diastolic change was not statistically significant. That is a trial result, not a treatment. Melonex capsules hold much less citrulline than that.

What do trials say about L-citrulline for blood pressure?

A pooled analysis of 8 trials found L-citrulline went with a small drop in systolic pressure. Doses ranged from 3 to 9 g a day (Barkhidarian 2019, citrulline meta-analysis).

The diastolic drop of 2.08 mm Hg was not statistically significant overall. In studies using 6 g a day or more, diastolic fell by 2.75 mm Hg (Barkhidarian 2019, citrulline meta-analysis).

Is the evidence for citrulline settled?

No. A review found citrulline's effect on blood pressure more questionable than arginine's. Meta-analyses disagree, and one of five trials found no significant change (Khalaf 2019, arginine and citrulline).

A single 10 g dose did not improve vessel function in older adults with heart failure (Aguayo 2021, L-citrulline review). Mixed results are the honest summary.

Why use citrulline instead of arginine?

Citrulline is used because the body turns it into arginine, and it raises blood arginine more than arginine itself does (Schwedhelm 2008, citrulline kinetics). Kidneys convert about 83% of it (Aguayo 2021, L-citrulline review).

  1. Swallow

Citrulline passes the liver and gut unchanged.

  2. Convert

    The kidneys make arginine.

  3. Signal

    Arginine feeds nitric oxide.

How much citrulline is in a Melonex capsule?

A Melonex capsule holds between about 167 and 500 mg of citrulline malate, and the single amount is not printed. Part of that weight is the malate.

Two capsules give at most 1 g of citrulline malate, against 3 g or more in the trials. No study has tested Melonex. Keep taking prescribed medicine, and ask your doctor first if you take blood pressure drugs, nitrates or sildenafil (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine).

FAQ01

Melonex questions people ask

Does watermelon give the same effect as L-citrulline?

Not reliably. Watermelon holds roughly 0.7 to 3.6 g of citrulline per kg (Aguayo 2021, L-citrulline review), so you would need a lot of fruit, and trial results used supplements.

What is the usual citrulline dose in studies?

Studied doses ran from 1.5 g twice daily up to 6 to 10 g a day, with a single 15 g dose in one trial (Aguayo 2021, L-citrulline review).

Can citrulline replace blood pressure medicine?

No. The average drop was small and varied between studies, so a supplement is no substitute for the medicine your doctor prescribed.
