L-Arginine Side Effects: Stomach, Potassium and More
L-arginine side effects most often show up in the stomach: nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea and bloating. Others listed are gout, headache, allergy and worse asthma. It can also interact with blood pressure drugs, nitrates and diuretics. These effects are mostly dose-related, and Melonex's blend is small.

What are the common L-arginine side effects?
The common L-arginine side effects are digestive: nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea and bloating. Mayo Clinic also lists gout, headache, allergic reactions and worsening asthma (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine).
Higher doses cause more stomach trouble. Trials ran to 24 g a day (Dong 2011, arginine meta-analysis).
| Effect | Seriousness | Step |
|---|---|---|
| Nausea, bloating, diarrhea | Usually mild | Stop and ask a clinician if it persists |
| Wheeze, hives, swelling | Possible allergy or asthma | Stop and seek care |
Which medicines interact with L-arginine?
L-arginine may interact with blood pressure drugs, nitrates, sildenafil, anticoagulants, diabetes drugs and potassium-sparing diuretics. (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine)
Pressure can fall too low, bleeding risk can rise, and potassium can climb.
Keep taking prescribed medicine, and tell your pharmacist about every supplement.
Who should avoid L-arginine altogether?
Avoid L-arginine after a recent heart attack, with an active herpes infection, in pregnancy or breastfeeding, and in children. Single amino acids may also strain the kidneys (Health Library, Arginine).
The Melonex label tells pregnant or nursing mothers, under-18s and people with a medical condition to ask a physician first.
