How to Check Blood Pressure at Home the Right Way
To check blood pressure at home, use a validated automatic upper-arm cuff in your size, rest seated for at least 5 minutes without talking, and take two readings one minute apart at the same time daily. Write both down and bring the log to your clinician. Wrist and finger monitors are not recommended.

How do you check blood pressure at home step by step?
You check blood pressure at home with a validated upper-arm cuff and a calm, repeatable routine. The American Heart Association lists the method (AHA, home BP monitoring).
Prepare
No smoking, caffeine or exercise for 30 minutes. Empty your bladder.
Sit quietly
At least 5 minutes, back supported, no talking.
Place the cuff
On bare skin just above the elbow crease, arm flat at heart level.
Measure twice
Two readings, one minute apart. Record both.
Repeat daily
Same time each day.
What do your home readings mean?
Your home readings sort into five AHA categories, from normal to severe (AHA, blood pressure readings). One reading is a snapshot. A log of many tells the story.
| Category | Systolic | Diastolic |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Under 120 | and under 80 |
| Elevated | 120-129 | and under 80 |
| Stage 1 | 130-139 | or 80-89 |
| Stage 2 | 140 or more | or 90 or more |
| Severe | Over 180 | and/or over 120 |
When is a home reading an emergency?
A reading above 180 and/or 120 is severe. Wait one minute and measure again. If it stays high with no symptoms, contact your clinician. With chest pain, shortness of breath, back pain, numbness, weakness, vision changes or trouble speaking, call 911 (AHA, blood pressure readings).
A good number is not a reason to stop your drug. Let your clinician decide.
If you add any supplement, keep the log so you can see changes. Read the results timeline.

FAQ01
Melonex questions people ask
Which arm should I use for home blood pressure readings?
Use the same arm each time, resting on a table at heart level. If your doctor has said one arm reads higher, use that one. Keep the cuff on bare skin, not over a sleeve.
How often should a home monitor be checked?
The AHA suggests having it checked against office equipment about once a year.
What time of day is best for readings?
Pick one time and keep it. The AHA advice is the same time each day, with two readings one minute apart.
